Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has successfully released the IAS Syllabus 2016 over its Official Site which is clearly given the belove section using which you can easily get to know the exam pattern and the exam syllabus for both prelims and mains exam. The candidates have to check the UPSC IAS Preliminary Mains Exam Pattern 2016 from the section below and prepare for the examination as per the same.

Union Public Service Commission is going to conduct the IAS (Indian Administrative Service) Exam. This exam is conducted for the appointment of various suitable applicants in various departments with the intention of fulfilling the requirement. By UPSC, this examination is conducted in two stages that are IAS Preliminary Exam and IAS Mains Exam. Firstly, the prelims exam is conducted and those who qualify this exam are called for the next exam which is called Mains Exam. WE, on this page, have provided the exam UPSC IAS Preliminary Mains Exam Pattern 2016. At first, the candidates will have to appear in the Preliminary Exam, Mains Exam (written and interview) and finally the Interview.

Preliminary Exam Pattern:

The preliminary exam is divided into two papers: paper 1 and paper 2. Check the same from the following table.

The applicants who qualify both the prelims and the mains exam will be called for the interview (conducted for 275).

UPSC IAS Syllabus 2016

With the help of this page, the applicants will be able to know the exam syllabus for both preliminary and mains exam. The pre exam consists of two papers, which are paper 1 and paper 2.

UPSC IAS Preliminary Exam Syllabus

Paper 1:

History of India and Indian national movement

General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization General Science

Indian and world geography- Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World

Indian politics and governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc

Current events of national and international importance

Economic and social development Ecology – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc

Part 2:

Comprehension

Logical reasoning and analytical ability

Interpersonal skills including communication skills

General mental ability

English language comprehension skills

Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. – Class X level)

UPSC IAS Mains Exam Syllabus

The mains exam syllabus contains two papers: paper A and paper B. The paper A comprises of 2 parts, whereas the paper B contains 7 parts.

Paper A:

Part 1: Any Indian Language

The applicants will have to select one language from languages which are included in Eighth Schedule of Constitution. This examination is not compulsory for those applicants who are from the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim.

Paper 2: English

The question asked in this would be based on the following section.

  • Comprehension of given passages
  • Precis Writing
  • Usage and Vocabulary

 

Paper B:

Since the paper B contain the subsequent 7 papers which we have mentioned via the table below:

3 Essay Candidates will require writing an essay on a specific topic. Choice of subjects will be given. They will be expected to keep closely to the topic of the essay to assemble their ideas in orderly and to write in brief.
4 General Studies 1 (Indian Heritage/Culture, World History & Geography)

Indian culture will cover the salient aspects of Art Forms, Literature and Architecture from ancient to modern times.

Modern Indian history from about the middle of the eighteenth century until the present- significant events, personalities, issues

The Freedom Struggle – its various stages and important contributors /contributions from different parts of the country.

Post-independence consolidation and reorganization within the country

5 General Studies 2 (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations)

Indian culture will cover the salient aspects of Art Forms, Literature and Architecture from ancient to modern times.

Modern Indian history from about the middle of the eighteenth century until the present- significant events, personalities, issues

The Freedom Struggle – its various stages and important contributors /contributions from different parts of the country.

Post-independence consolidation and reorganization within the country

6 General Studies 3 (Technology, Economic Development, Bio-Diversity, Environment, Security & Disaster Management)

Inclusive growth and issues arising from it.

Development, Bio diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management.

Government Budgeting.

Indian Economy and issues relating to planning, mobilization of resources, growth, development and employment.

7 General Studies 4 (Ethics, Integrity & Aptitude)

Ethics and Human Interface: Essence, determinants and consequences of Ethics in human actions; dimensions of ethics; ethics in private and public relationships.

Attitude: content, structure, function; its influence and relation with thought and behaviour; moral and political attitudes; social influence and persuasion.

Human Values – lessons from the lives and teachings of great leaders, reformers and administrators; role of family, society and educational institutions in inculcating values.

8 and 9 Optional 1 (Of your choice)/ Optional 2 (Of your choice) Botany, Economics, General Studies, Geography, Management, Philosophy, Public Administration

Agriculture, Chemistry, Medical science, Electrical Engineering, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Sociology, Statistics, Law, Essays, Commerce & Accountancy and Psychology

Important Note:

The applicants can choose any one from the paper 8 and 9 as per their choice.
